Linocut Studio: Political Printmaking

  • Communication 2645 Milwaukee Street Madison, WI, 53704 United States (map)

ALL AGES, SOBER SPACE. Masks are required at all times inside our building. Sliding scale $10-20-30 (online registration required, pay at door). Hosted by artist and art educator Lydia Zoells (@lydia.zoells.art).

Explore the powerful and flexible medium of linocut printmaking and channel your hope and rage into a political print.

Linocut is a printmaking method that involves carving into a piece of linoleum to create an image that you can print again and again. The accessibility of this cheap and simple artmaking process has made it one of most popular printmaking mediums, and artists have used it for decades to convey powerful messages about the ideas, movements, and causes that are important to them and their communities. This one-day studio will offer materials and education so that you can carve a linoleum block and hand-print on paper or fabric (no press needed). Promote a cause with a poster, express yourself with an art print, or design a patch to wear your heart on your sleeve. Paper will be provided, but you'll need to bring your own fabric. No prior experience necessary.

Accessibility notes: Linoleum is much softer than wood, but it still can be hard on the hands and wrists if you have sensitivities in those areas. We will have a small amount of easy-cut lino on hand (actually made of rubber, not linoleum), and can discuss methods for cutting more ergonomically.

We have two steps to come in the front door, and one step in our back door. There are two steps into the second portion of our building to reach the bathroom. We have ramps we can put it place for anyone who needs them. Please let us know if we may assist you in accessing the space.

We have limited parking behind our building in a small lot.
